Task Force Ranger, made up of Army Rangers, Delta Force Operators, some Navy SEALS, and pilots from the 160th SOAR, launched a raid into the city on October 3, 1993, to capture 2 key figures within the Habr Gidr clan which was led by Mohammed Farah Aidid. The mission was to take 30 minutes, but 2 MH-60 Blackhawk helicopters were shot down. This caused the battle to drag on until the morning of October 4 when a UN/U.S. convoy rescued the trapped soldiers at the first crash site. CW3 Mike Durant was the pilot of the second blackhawk shot down and he was held captive for 11 days. Ultimately 18 Americans were killled during the battle.
