Confederate forces under the command of General Sterling Price began their campaign to bring Missouri into the Confederacy was their failure to capture the city of Ironton in September of 1864. Price's army was driven back after their assault on Union troops there. His army totaled 12,000 troops and combined Union forces of 4,500 cavalry and reinforced Union infantry were closing in on him from several different directions. Finally on October 23, 1864, Union forces battled to a victory over Price's army and the Confederates were driven out of Missouri.
