In 1991, as a result of Gorbachev's reforms anti-communist factions fought the government and republics slipped away. So, in essence, the country was dying. The Soviet Union collapsed in 1991 and Boris Yeltsin, a strong anti-communist took power. The last president was Putin, and now it is Medvedev.
