Numerous causes existed:

  1. With the Spaniards gone the Pueblos lost their reason for unifying in the first place.
  2. They picked up their old ways and began their old rivalries.
  3. Not all of the Pueblos were happy that the Spaniards were gone.
  4. The Navajo, Apache and Comanche who for years had been kept at bay by the Spaniards increased their attacks on the Pueblos.

It violently tried to suppressed the Native religion. It was also closely tied to the violent attempt to control all aspects of the Pueblo peoples lives and the demand that they supply all their labor and goods to the Spanish for free. It was truly evil. This is what led to the successful Pueblo Revolt of 1680 which killed or forced all the the Spanish colonists, soldiers and priests out of what is now New Mexico. When the Spanish returned in1692 they had to change their tactics.
