We only fought the north. They were the communist aggressers.
The USAF & USN fought in NORTH Vietnam (in the skies); the US Army & USMC fought on the ground in SOUTH Vietnam.
US Civil War=North wanted to retain the South Vietnam War=North wanted to conquer the South
The Communist North Vietnam acting in support and defence of the capitalist South Vietnamese.
North Vietnam=Air War South Vietnam=Ground & Riverine War
The nation of North Vietnam (which no longer exists...it's called Vietnam today). The country that the US was allied to, South Vietnam, doesn't exist either...it was consumed by North Vietnam. The official name of SOUTH Vietnam was the "Republic of South Vietnam."
To fight communism. To stop a communist nation (North Vietnam) from taking over a non-communist country (SOUTH Vietnam).
South Vietnam
North VN vs South VN; US helped the South.
The US helped South Vietnam with the South's blessing; the North was deciding if they should fight just the Southerners, or the US too. In the end, the North fought them both.
The US helped in order to stop the spread of Communism into another nation and it was Viet Nam.
1. US Civil War-North fought to keep the union together. 2. Vietnam War-North fought to re-unite with the south.
There IS no North and South Vietnam, only Vietnam. After the US withdrew combat forces from South Vietnam, North Vietnam violated the peace agreement, invaded and conquered South Vietnam. Game over.
