Following the defeat of Germany, control of the country was divided amongst the allied countries in a pie-like manner. Germany's capitol, Berlin was divided similarly. Berlin, however, lay within the area of Germany given to Russian control. Thus, the American/British-controlled portions of Berlin were surrounded by Russian-controlled Germany. The Berlin Wall was built by the Russians in the territory they had control over, the US had no means by which to prevent it, short of declaring war on Russia. The wall surrounded the American/British-controlled section.

They didnt. After ww2 France, England, the US, and russia all got a share( russia got the biggest) of Germany. The east side was controlled by russia and the west by the allies, but the capitol was in the east part. so the allies and the russians spilt the capitol like the country. So there was this little democractic part out in a sea of communism. you just had to cross the street in berlin and you could be free. The russians didnt want this so they built a 10 ft wall to keep their people from escaping into west berlin.

The Soviet Union built the Berlin Wall to block their section (East Berlin) from the US/French/Britishcontrolled sections in West Berlin. It appears that the German Communist Walter Ulbricht, concerned that Germans were escaping from West Germany convinced the Russians to build the wall. The construction of the wall was supervised by the East German (communist) leaderErich Hoeneker.
