Thomas Jefferson initially wanted only to buy New Orleans, to guarantee access to the Mississippi for US western commerce. When France offered to sell the entirety of its central North American claims, for little more than was expected to be the price of New Orleans, the US negotiators quickly accepted. Adding this vast tract to the control of the Americans effectively blunted any further British pursuits south of Canada (which may have been the primary aim of Napoleon in the agreement).
