The Quasi-War
From 1798 to 1800, the US engaged in naval warfare with French ships and privateers during the French Revolution. Upset that the US would not support the French Republic, the French began seizing American merchant ships trading with Great Britain and in the Caribbean.
No declaration of war was made, but on July 9, 1798, Congress authorized President John Adams to employ US forces to protect American commerce. US warships and privateers subsequently recaptured US merchant vessels, as well as 93 French ships.

The major wars between the US Revolutionary War and the US Civil War were the War of 1812 (which again pitted the US against Great Britain) and the Mexican-American War after the annexation of Texas.
