The French in VietnamThe French colonized Vietnam (and also Laos and Cambodia) from about 1860 onwards. The process of colonization was completed in the 1880s. In WW2 the Japanese seized control of the area (in 1940-41) and ruled it with the active collaboration of the pro-Vichy French there. In Vietnam an effective resistance movement (the future Vietminh) formed round Ho Chi Minh. With some help from the U.S., mainly training by experts in guerrilla warfare, it almost succeeded in gaining control of the whole of Vietnam by the end of WW2.In 1946 the French army returned, and the struggle continued. However, by 1954 the French were defeated and had to withdraw. So the French were essentially not involved in the Vietnam War as seen from the US viewpoint.
they didn't want to have a foriegn country involved in their country
US sent military aid to France in 1940 to help them take over Vietnam.
Because of the alliance with south Vietnam We helped them with their economy and government and with the threat of a northern invasion from northern Vietnam we intervened to stop the north from taking over the south and creating one giant country of Vietnam. Hope this helps bud.
Vietnam: Why we fought: to stop communist aggression (domino theory), agreed to help French fight North Vietnam because we needed help with the soviet union What we wanted: stop spread of communism in Asia and Europe What we got: nothing
Pres. Eisenhower, former clerk of Gen. MacAuther who said "the U.S. should not get involved in a land war in Asia." Ike was advised by some of the joint chiefs to enter the war along with the French in order to secure Camron Bay that was later (after the Nam war) used by Russia as a sub base. Jobs! Ike told them "we do not need Camron Bay." Kennedy said Nam was a civil war, not U.S. biz ;then was assassinated. Johnson took over and expanded the U.S. roll in the Asian theater.AnswerThe U.S. was involved from way back. In WWII, the U.S. promised a young nationalist leader that in return for his help against the Japanese, they would help Vietnam achieve independence from French colonialism after the war was over. That promise was broken, and the French re-occupied Indochina. The war for Independence started, and although it was French troops that bore the brunt of the fighting against what was perceived to be communism, most of the costs for the French forces were paid by the U.S. gov't. It was only after the great French defeat in 1954 when the French said they needed more money to continue, did the U.S. cut off their funds. We fought over the way the government in Vietnam was being run. They had communism which means if someone needed something in Vietnam like food or money, it was given to them.
They sent ships and weapons to help us fight the war.
President Eisenhower sent military advisors and maybe some technicians to Vietnam to help the government there stay in power. That was the beginning of US involvement there.
we asked them to supply us and help us win the war.
The French were told the US would not get involved in the European war. They got help from the US later in the Lend Lease Act.
