The Japanese had seized undefended Guadalcanal from the British, and had begun building an airfield on it. If the Japanese were able to finish this airfield, bombers based on it would be within range of northern Australia, and also of the shipping lanes from the US to Australia. The US was trying to build strength in Australia to begin fighting back into areas just overrun by the Japanese. This threat to the lifeline of Australia was deemed so serious that it had to be stopped, even though the US was not ready to fight. The men initially put ashore on Guadalcanal by the Americans went in with equipment and rations left over from WWI.
