Pearl Harbor Hawaii was thousands of miles closer to Asia than the 48 states. It had a shallow harbor (which was wrongly thought to be too shallow for airdropped torpedoes. It was far away from any enemy held islands for land based planes to reach, and thought to be safe from enemy attack. There were submarine nets to prevent enemy submarines from sneaking in. There was a large Army base there as well to protect the Naval ships. In the 1920s, Gen. Billy Mitchell predicted that the Japanese would attack Pearl Harbor, (he did not say when of course), but, by December 1941, most people had forgotten about his warnings, and they did not think that the Japan could launch an air attack on Pearl Harbor with carrier planes (and torpedoes that could work in shallow water), the way the British Navy had used carrier planes to attack the Italian fleet at Taruento, Italy.

Survivors were very surprised at the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. For one thing, they had no warning. For another, it was very early on a Sunday morning, so most of the soldiers were still asleep when it happened. Additionally, communications are vital in any war, be it at Antietam or Pearl Harbor. US Naval intelligence had placed Japanese warships, including the ones used at Pearl Harbor, at bay in their home ports near Japan.
No. Peal Harbor was full of destroyed US warships and was practically useless after the bombings it received.
For the immediate future, less US warships to fight.
It still would've meant war. Just not so destructive, as some of our biggest warships were stationed at Pearl Harbor.
Pearl Harbor was the main base for the US Pacific Fleet.
Pearl Harbor provides shelter from storms at sea for the US.
The attack was successful as it eliminated the US Battleships. The attack was a failure because it failed to eliminate the warships that counted...aircraft carriers.
