As more and more railroads were expanding across the North, the South was itching to lay some tracks. However, the land in the newly purchased Mexican Cession was too mountainous (the Rocky Mountains). The area known as the Gadsden Purchase was a flat area of land, perfect for railroads. The United States send James Gadsden with $10 million to buy the area.
The territory wasn't used for a railroad though. Illinois Senator Stephen Douglas proposed the Kansas-Nebraska Act to bring revenue to his home state in which a railroad would run through Chicago instead of the South. To appease the South, he proposed opening the Kansas and Nebraska Territories to Popular Sovereignty, which meant the residents would be able to vote on whether the Territories became free or slave.
The Gadsen Purchase was acquired by James Gadsen.
The land on the southern edge of Arizona and New Mexico was acquired by the US through the Gadsen Purchase (aka Venta de La Mesilla). It is named for the treaty (the Gadsen Treaty) signed by diplomat and executive of the South Carolina Railroad James Gadsen.
