The final surrender is September 2nd 1945 on the USS Missouri in Tokyo bay. Japan could not withstand atomic attack on Hiroshima & Nagasaki. Effectively Japan was defeated in conventional warfare, but the idea of invading the Japanese home islands was too terrible to contemplate for the US.
