First, the US and Japan were at war, and had BEEN at war for over 3.5 years, Japan having attacked the US without warning. Japan had refused to surrender. The alternative- a conventional invasion of the Japanese home islands, was projected to result in the death of more than 1 million Allied service members, and a larger number of Japanese military and civilian personnel. After the first atomic weapon was used, Japan again refused surrender. After the second atomic weapon was used, they surrendered.

Japan did not invent the atom bomb. The atomic bomb was first created in the United States in the summer of 1945. The U.S. then used atomic bombs against Japan on august 6 and August 9 of that year. Japan does not have nor did it ever have nuclear weapons.
The US wanted these weapons to be used against Germany, before they could use them against the Allies. However Germany was defeated with conventional weapons before these weapons were ready. So the US decided to use them on Japan as soon as they were ready, to end the war without having to invade Japan.
