Annex means to take control. In 1846, the US annexed Texas, under an agreement that made it the 28th US state. Texas had fought for its independence against Mexico in 1836, but faced difficulties maintaining their status as an independent republic. Since most of the Texicans were originally from the US frontier, joining the US was a practical step toward preventing their reconquest by Mexico. The US also agreed to pay $10 million in outstanding debts. As it developed, the US had designs on the entire Southwest and California, and almost immediately provoked the Mexican American War (1846-1848).
