The USA had a policy of containment in which they promised to provide armed support to any country which was threatened by foreign (communist) invasion. The USA did not particularly need to have South Korea as an ally but they wanted to win the Cold War and limit the communist presence around the world. This is why the USA intervened in the North Korean invasion of South Korea. South Korea was also a good place to place American nuclear missiles as it was close to the USSR and China.
