They didn't think it was 4000 years old, neither did they all think this at the time.

Many more at that time than today believed the earth to be around 6000 years old based on biblical chronology from the first day of creation.

Many today still hold to this, citing the record of biblical inerrancy and much underplayed scientific evidence pointing to a relatively young earth, such as the decrease of the earth's magnetic field, the slowing down of the earth's spin, the lack of salt and silt in the sea, the burning down of the sun and the recession of the moon.

All these point towards an age for the earth within thousands, not millions of years as popularised by adherents to the theory of evolution, secularism and Darwinism.
