They didn't think it was 4000 years old, neither did they all think this at the time.
Many more at that time than today believed the earth to be around 6000 years old based on biblical chronology from the first day of creation.
Many today still hold to this, citing the record of biblical inerrancy and much underplayed scientific evidence pointing to a relatively young earth, such as the decrease of the earth's magnetic field, the slowing down of the earth's spin, the lack of salt and silt in the sea, the burning down of the sun and the recession of the moon.
All these point towards an age for the earth within thousands, not millions of years as popularised by adherents to the theory of evolution, secularism and Darwinism.

It is estimated that around 6.6 billion people were alive on Earth in 2007. This number has continued to increase in the years since.
4000 years.
The best answer I can think of (and undoubtedly the most controversial) is religion. Some religions state that the Earth was created approximately 4000 years ago along with the rest of the universe. I am neither agreeing with or discrediting religions that state this, only pointing out that they contradict what some scientific discoveries (such as the results of carbon dating) have proclaimed.
