The war in Europe started when Germany and Russia attacked Poland on September 1, 1939. England and France had treaties with Poland that obligated them to declare war on Germany if Poland was attacked.

England and France declared war on Germany but they didn't have the capability of making any meaningful contribution to the defense of Poland. On May 10, 1940, Germany attacked France. France was defended by French and British armies with obsolete equipment and strategies and quickly fell.

Germany then started bombing Britain attempting to force Britain to surrender or in preparation of a cross Channel invasion of England.

Italy attacked British forces in Egypt and the British beat them badly. Egypt and Libya represented the first attacks by the Allies against the Axis.
