ancient Egypt needed to plan its events around the flooding of the Nile River. Its seeds had to be planted as soon as the flood waters receded. So they planned the calendar based on the annual flood.

To make the date precise, they chose the date the star Sirius, or the Dog Star, rose at the same time as the sun. (Due to the wobble of the earth, called precession of the poles, it rose 3 months earlier 4,000 years ago than it does today. Like the Julian calendar, it would not be a good calendar to use today.)
