If you are referreing to the killing of the buffalo on the Great Plains, then the answer is simple. The American government didn't like the Plains Indians who lived on the Plains, mostly because they wanted the land for Americans. The government encouraged the kiling of the buffalo because the Plains Indians relied on the buffalo for everything they did and everything they needed to survive. Their whole life was based around the buffolo, the government knew that if they killed the buffol then the Indians would have to surrender because they wouldn't be able to survive without them and then they would agree with the American's rules so they could survive. Once they had done this, the Americans could change the Plains Indians and make them become like Americans which is what they wanted.

As I understand it Americans killed buffalo (bison's actually) for three reasons.

  1. First it was to feed railroad workers.
  2. Later it was for the hides
  3. The government encouraged eradicating the buffalo because the American Indians depended heavily on them for food and clothing and without them would have a hard time surviving.

When European Americans began to arrive on the Great Plains, many of them killed bison for sport. In addition, they killed as many as possible with the goal of eliminating the bison. They hoped that would cause the Native Americans who depended on bison to starve. They came very close to completely wiping out all the bison.

What role did the buffalo play in the conflict between Native Americans and the US government?

The government saw that by killing the buffalo they were killing Indians from starvation the government told anyone who went on the train across the Indian land could bring Guns and shoot the Buffalo as they went by. When the train had stopped by and the shooting had stopped people the government had hired would either shed the buffalo from its skin or use the meat, sometimes both. In fact the American army was alerted to come down to the west and help kill the Indians and any buffalo they see.
