It started out as a division of Labour.
1. Kshatriya -(kings and army men) - Strong personality, brawn, commanding presence - these folks became kings and in turn they protected the kingdom.
2. Brahmins - (scholars, priests) - Folks who concentrated more on learning, scriptures and teaching - because of intrinsic nature of knowledge and that which accompanies it, they were respected.
3. Vaishyas - (traders) - Folks who liked business and could handle money.
4. Shudras - ( unskilled labour) - folks who didn't have any particular skill but could work under others as long as it didn't require too much skill ( brain or brawn).
There was no concept of untouchables at all - this came along much later.
This division of labour went along quite well till
- the king had a son - who was leaning towards learning and not ruling
- the brahmin had a son - who wanted to either trade or fight and not learn to read.
- the vaishya had a son - who was an unskilled person
- the shudra had a son - who was skilled at reading, fighting and understood finances.
The king didn't want the wimp to lose out on the hard won kingdom- so what essentially was a democracy with changeable rulers became a birthright.
The brahmin didn't want his son to do stuff that he felt was not going in the right path towards god.
The vaishya didn't want his son to lose out on the merchant empire that he had created.
So they made sure that all of these things became a genetic birthright to protect their progeny and pseudo-social hierarchy.
The shudra unfortunately lost out in this because although he was unskilled, at least his son was bright , but was now denied what was originally accepted - a position to do what he wanted in the society, based on skills and not birth.
This led to the huge digression from Division of Labour (with dignity in any job) to Possession due to Birthright.
It was meant to be so that people did the work they were best suited for, with no one being better than an other and all the forms of work were seen as equally necessary and useful. As it progressed a hierarchy was established and it became harder for people to change castes even though they may be suited better for another work, until you had to stay in the caste you were born in. This probably came from many fathers wanting their sons to carry on their business and work and inherit it.
