Japan and the US were at war, Japan having attacked the US and Great Britain. After 4 years of war, the Allies had pushed the Japanese back to the home islands, and were looking at the prospect of having to invade the Japanese homeland, with an estimated death toll of 1 million Allied servicemen. Japan had been warned about the atomic bomb, but refused to surrender. After Hiroshima was bombed, Japan was warned again, and again, refused to surrender. After a second atomic weapon was used on Nagasaki, Japan surrendered.

during WWII it was estimated that over 500,000 british lives would be taken if mainland Japan was invaded. therefore we warned the Japanese about the bomb, they laughed, dropped it, then they laughed no more but didn't surrender. so we launched another then they finally gave in. so its all about numbers, lose over 500,000 british not counting Americans, or 2 atom bombs. its really that simple.

It was meant to intimidate Japan into surrender (which it did) in order to prevent the necessity of a US invasion of mainland Japan, which according to most US analysts at the time would take a huge toll in US casualties.
