It started because General Ulysses S. Grant wanted to plan a surprise attack on the Confederate soldiers. The Confederates send Calvary men to spy on the Unions while they were resting in the wilderness. So THEY decided to plan a surprise attack on the UNIONS! No one won the battle.

The battle of the Wilderness lasted from May 4, until May 7, 1864.

It was indecisive and practically led to a stalemate.

At night of that day Grant's Army, instead retreating northward to Germanna Ford, set out southward advancing toward the heart of the enemy country, giving but little importance to its line of communication.

Taking that decision Grant took aback his opponent, Lee, who was somewhat outbalanced by the unexpected movement. And he then was able but only by a hair's breadth to prevent Grant's Army from interposing between his Army and Richmond.

Thinking his huge army could roll Lee's army up, outnumbering it two to one, Grant pitched it and was stymied after stiff southern resistance. He moved around Lee after the defeat, and was defeated again at Spotsylvania and Cold Harbor.
