Many Irish hated the thought of British rule. However the entire British government was determined to over throw and take control over Ireland.

Liberals, firstly under Gladstone from his 'conversion' in 1886. Conservatives opposed it forcefully when they came into power in the 70s with their 'Killing Home Rule with Kindness' approach. Finally, not a Home Rule but a dominion status was granted to two distinct parts of Ireland by the Coalition government (led by Lloyd George) under the Anglo-Irish Treaty 1921.

The Home Rule
The Irish Republican Army (IRA) were a paramilitary group with the goal of freeing Ireland from British rule. They originally formed in 1913, under the name "The Irish Volunteers," in response to the Ulster Volunteer Force's creation in Northern Ireland (which was intended to help prevent the Home Rule - a document trying to let Southern Ireland vote on their own taxes) They officially became the IRA in 1969.
The term goes back to when Ireland was still completely under British rule and did not have a parliament of its own, between 1801 and 1921. Home Rule was the desire by some for Ireland to have its independence and rule itself. The term is not really used now, but it would now be the concept of a united Ireland. Currently Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom.
Without England and Scotland, Wales and Ireland, the 'home nations' the empire would not have existed.

Yes it closed in the late1980s. I believe it was the first to be called BHS....."British" was a problematic adjective in Ireland at the time.
First he was taken against his will from the British mainland to Ireland. Next he escaped back to his home and went on to Europe where he became a priest (probably in Italy and/or France) until the Pope sent him back to Ireland as a missionary.

People from Scotland settled in the north east part of Ireland 400 years agoto try and colonise the island and make the people british. Ireland became part of the UK when a parliament that only protestants could join passed the act of union. only 10% of the population were protestant in Ireland. Ireland fought for its Independence, which was granted but with one condition. that 6 counties in the north east of the island stay with the UK. So the country was split in two. Creating Southern Ireland and Northern Ireland, southern Ireland was to be a self governing territory of Britain with its King, Gerorge. But southern Ireland never took off, its rulers quickly declared it a republic. Meanwhile in Ni, these 6 counties were not 100% British and protestant, they were 45% Irish catholic. So the two groups started fighting and killing each other. Irish wanted the six counties (northern Ireland) to leave the UK and join the rest of the island as a republic, separate from the UK. But the British wanted it to stay with the UK. there is peace now, with a shared government, no one party is allowed to have an overall rule. but people still regard themselves as British or Irish. most Irish people in Ni have Irish passports, even though they were born in a part of the UK which would make them British. but you can choose your nationality in Ni, a unique situation in the world. simple solution, Ireland shouldn't have been taken over.
In the same way that Santa travels in all other countries. Ireland is no different.
