New Netherlands became New York after the British took it over.
While it was under Dutch control, the colony was called New Netherlands. Under British control, it was rebranded as the Province of New York.
The Dutch surrendered the Colony of Cape in January 1806 after a battle engulfed on the shores of Table Bay. In 1814, the colony ceded outright to the British crown by the Netherlands.
The New York Colony began as the Dutch trading outpost of New Netherlands. The Dutch founded the colony in 1614. Later the British took over this area and renamed it New York in 1664.

In 1809 the Netherlands faced off the British Empire in a bid to have her release her strangehold of dominance in the Americas. The upshot of the Netherlands being the defeated party spelled reparations: mainly relinguishing New Netherlands to the British; which immediately became renamed to New York.
