There had been from the beginning a simple form of the creed that each Christian professed at the time of baptism. The creed developed in response to various heresies that were going around at the time. Whenever someone began to spread teachings that contradicted the faith as handed down by the apostles and their successors, the Church met in councils to define once for all what the true teaching was. Over time, these teachings became the creed of the Church, a statement of some of our core beliefs. We reaffirm our belief in the Church's teaching every time we say the creed.
