They were fighting for their independence, just like their grandfathers in the Revolution.

Some went to war because it seemed a grand adventure, when the war was beginning. It had been generations since the last war on American soil and few knew of the horrors to come. They went because everybody else was going. Companies were raised in every county seat town, and men who did not go got few smiles from the girls. Some fought because the Yankees were invading the south, seeking to coerce the southern states back into the Union. After the spring of 1862 they fought because there was a draft law, conscription, that said they had to. They fought because their family, friends and neighbors were in the ranks beside them in the locally raised companies, and they wanted to be able to go back home after the war and not be ashamed.
