Cotton was important to the south because during the civil war that is all the south had. They didn't have big factories to make guns. The south wanted to use cotto to lure England and France into a military alliance. This was also called the cotton diplomacy.
The invention of the cotton gin allowed for a more efficient method of separating cotton from its seeds. This allowed the South to produce more cotton at a faster rate, thereby increasing its economy and trade.
