The Dark Ages happened because of the new value in culture after the collapse of the economy. The Dark Ages were characterized by deeply sad mental thoughts and incredibly detailed but dark artwork.
If you would consider the fall of Rome to be the start of the so called Dark Ages then there could be many answers to this question. The true question would be what civilizations is responsible for the fall of Rome. No one has an exact answer and there are many theories to this. A simple answer would be that the combination of barbarian invasions and over expansion caused the fall of the Roman Empire. In this case then it is the both the Roman civilization as well as the Germanic Tribes and other barbarian cultures that were invading at the time that caused the fall of Rome.
There is no exact reason and many scholars now do not use the term Dark Ages or the Fall of Rome as both of these terms do not accurately describe the situation. It is popular to say that "Rome was not built in a day" but it is also accurate to say that "Rome did not fall in a day" as well. Nor do the Latin World fall into darkness because of the actions of a single civilization.

The dark ages were a period of time in Western Europe, prior to 1000 AD, known as such because of the general lack of highly centralized government as was known under the Roman rule. This was caused by a falling apart of the Roman empire, which was caused by a number of circumstances, one being the pressures put on the Roman Empire by migratory tribes from eastern Europe (the Huns, Vandals, Visigoth, etc.). The dark ages were categorized by localized government, lower trade, some loss of scholarship, and migratory movement of people groups.

No volcanic eruption in human history has darkened the entire world. But about 535 AD a volcano at Krakatoa erupted so violently it may have darkened the sky around the world to an extent that it caused famines and threw Europe into the Dark Ages (they are not called the Dark Ages because the sky was dark, rather it was considered to be a period of intellectual darkness).

The Greek Dark Ages began in about the year 1200 BC. There is no exact year for their beginning. Clearly, the Greek Dark Ages and the Dark Ages were not the same thing, and they were not really related, as the Dark Ages began in the middle of the 5th century AD.
