The potential loot attracted a mass of carpetbaggers who swooped on it's defeated provinces. It also provided employment for the manpower of impoverished peninsular Greece in the armies maintained by the Hellenistic states which the Persian Empire was broken up into when Alexander died. Greece became progressively depopulated with this flow of it's people to Asia and North Africa over the next three centuries.

Persia invaded Greece. The southern Greeks decided that if they could defeat the Persian fleet, the invasion would be exposed to defeat on land and could not be fed in such a poor country in winter. The defeat of the Persian navy at Salamis resulted in the withdrawal of half the Persian army and its subsequent defeat the following year when the Greeks assembled at Platia.
