Alexander tried to impose Greek culture on the empire after he took it over. After his death his generals divided the empire up and established what we call today the Hellenistic Kingdoms based on Greek culture. This culture was limited to the upper class, but established centres of learning in some centres such as Alexandria.

The defeat of the Persian Empire by the Greeks, particularly at the Battle of Marathon and the Battle of Salamis, instilled a sense of pride and confidence in the Greek city-states. It demonstrated their military prowess and the strength of their united front against a common enemy. This victory inspired Greeks to further invest in their cultural, political, and intellectual achievements, resulting in the flourishing of arts, philosophy, and democracy in classical Greece.
