This is something that I am not particularly aware of, but assuming that it was the case, it would not be terribly surprising. In Jewish culture, there is a great import to writing the Name of God, the tetragrammaton (YHVH in Hebrew letters). Still to this day, religious Jews refuse to write the Name of God on perishable surfaces and still bury books with the Name of God, rather than destroy them. As a result, using a different symbol to represent the Name of God that is not the actual name is often used to avoid the issue of possible desecration of the name. In the case of the Disciples, it would be using the four dots.
