The day of door-to-door selling has largely ended. Too many communities have banned it. A door-to-door salesman was just what he sounded like: a man (it usually was a man) who walked down the street with a case of samples, knocked on every door and asked if the lady of the house would like to buy some of whatever he was selling. There are some direct sales forces out there. Kirby vacuums are sold this way, and so are Avon and Mary Kay cosmetics. But today, you have to call one of these people and ask them to come to your home.
A sales oriented business will focus much more of it's energy on selling. This is usually done by door to door selling or what is called telesales over the phone. Other sales oriented businesses may rely entirely on social functions by selling exclusively from booths or kiosks. Some local stores and grocers also function entirely as a sales oriented business without the use of conventional advertising.
Corporate sale is a term defined for the sale of a product or service to the corporate sector. It is unlike door to door selling to the individuals.
They go door to door selling expensive Kirby vacuum cleaners, making money not only off the sale of the cleaners but off the financing that they offer.
Door to Door Sales
It depends on what product the salesman is selling and what "rules" are in place in the area. Door to door salesmen usually sell on behalf of another company (the client). So the client can set the hours during which salesmen may solicit sales. I used to sell a telecoms service as a door to door salesman in the UK and we had virtually no restrictions (we were only limited by our call center which registered all the sales, which closed at 10pm). However there may be regulations in place in certain areas. There are some "no cold calling" zones where it is illegal to sell door to door at any time. My colleagues who were "selling" charity subscriptions could only work until 6pm or something like that - I think this was because of some government regulations. Some well-known self-made millionaires who started in door-to-door sales include Mary Kay Ash (founder of Mary Kay Cosmetics), Mark Hughes (founder of Herbalife), and Brownie Wise (saleswoman for Tupperware). These successful entrepreneurs began their careers in direct selling before launching their own companies.
"Directive selling" is an industry term in retail that refers to an assertive, proactive approach toward customer service on the part of the sales associate, the customer is "directed" toward specific merchandise.
Door to door sales - come rain or shine!
Kirby vacuums are not sold in stores, but are sold by door-to-door representatives. If you are looking for a store to repair them, most good vacuum shops can handle that.
