The reason that there have been so many aftershocks after the 2010 Christchurch earthquake is because bigger earthquakes have not only stronger aftershocks, but more of them.

Aftershocks happen because when an earthquake occurs, the earth's plates hardly ever settle into a stable position straight away. So, the newly moved rock has to be settle.

What were the causes of the Christchurch earthquake?

The September earthquake in Christchurch occurred as a result of movement between the Australian and Pacific Tectonic Plates. The movement of which affects the NZ Southern Alps. It is usual for these plates to move up to 4cms annually, however, the September quake was believed to have seen movement of up to 5meters. The earthquake that occurred on the 22nd February was one of the many aftershocks as a result of the September quake, however, the reason that the February earthquake was so much more violent and caused fatalities, was because of the aftershock was incredibly shallow and closer to the CBD than the original September quake.

Do small tremors occur after an earthquake?

An earthquake is caused by 'plates' in the ground shifting and moving. and after a major shift there might be a small aftershock witch is when the 'plates' in the ground move slightly as they are going back into place

Was the Christchurch earthquake a deep earthquake or not?

The earthquake in Christchurch, NZ on the 22nd of February, 2011 was located just 4 or 5km underground. To put this in perspective, the quake in September, located near Christchurch was twice the depth, 10km below ground. So although the quake may have been 6.3 on the Richter Scale, it was a lot shallower than the one in September (7.3 on the Richter Scale), did a lot more damage and took many, many more lives. Hope this helps.
