The ejido system was meant to redistribute parcels of land to previous laborers who worked them for little or no remuneration. These lands were owned by caciques who greatly benefited at the expense of their workers, using a kind of feudal system.
After the Mexican Revolution (1910 - 1921) most lands were expropriated and redistributed as a form of communal land. This process however, failed to take into account that by redistributing these lands to poor, ignorant people, who had no capital or knowledge to use machinery or fertilizers, their use reverted to that of subsistence farming, decreasing productivity and failing to improve the lives of these farmers.
Although the ejido system gave land to many poor villagers, it did not lift them out of poverty. Farmers could not use the land as security for a bank loan because they did not really own their land- the ejido did.

Not at all; poor productivity fromejidos led Mexican president Carlos Salinas in 1992 to change the Mexican constitution and allowed for leasing and selling of such land. Since then some of the ejido land has been sold to corporations, although most of it is still in the hands of farmers. Some ejido cooperatives have found alternative uses for their land other than farming, such as leasing it to hotel chains and non-farming corporations.
