When Lincoln won the election of 1860, and took over the office of President of the United States, he had no intention of ending slavery. But, he was going to stop any more territories or new states to have slavery. When 11 of the southern states seceded, Lincoln finally realized that slavery would have to come to and end, in order to eventually have the United States as an entirely country of one, and not 2 separate sections. Lincoln called for a meeting at the White House with some of the most influential free Black men in the country. Lincoln explained that, "It's time we parted ways." Lincoln explained that the United States had purchased a island called Granada. He tried to get the free Blacks to lead the slaves to freedom someplace else other than in the United States. The free Blacks refused Lincoln's offer. Lincoln stated, "I fear it will take another 100 years of blood and death, before the Black race will achieve the freedoms that they want today." Lincoln was right. Exactly 100 years later, with the Civil Rights Movement, pain, suffering, sacrifice, blood, and death had to occur before Blacks would receive the rights that they wanted back in the 1860's.

Places like Mexico, have oppressed/corrupt government, so they venture to the United States to find not only safety, but to get a chance to live a "free" life. Also, keep in mind, Mexico, is quite close to the United States, so they are able to come into the United States cheaper and quicker.

Ever since the beginnings of the US the two sides had disputed on this issue but had always come to compromises that allowed the South to continue this inhuman practice. Finally, the election of Abraham Lincoln was seen by the South as sign that the North was going to end slavery, so they rebelled and left the United States, forming the Confederate States of American. The North went to war to stop them from breaking up the United States. Many people will say that it was actually about state's rights versus the power of a central government, but history shows that the only state's rights issue the South was interested in enough to go to war was Slavery.
