So that no particular part of the government would have too much power. Each branch has a defined and limited role and the ability to check the power of the other branches. Checks and balances and Separation of powers help the government from becoming tyrannical.
Having escaped the clutches of despotic rule, the Founding Fathers did not want that to happen in their new country. Therefore, they decided the best way to avoid this problem was to not put too much power in one branch of government adn to create several so there was a system of checks and balances. As a result, they created the Executive, Legislative and Judicial branches of the government to assure a balance of power.
The founding fathers, who had all experienced the tyranny of King George, knew how the absolute power of a king could sour an entire nation. Power was split between three separate but equal branches that would "Check" the actions of one another to create "Balance". The separation of powers was intended to keep the power in the hands of the people, the voters who select most of the executive and legislative branch.

The reason that the framers of the US Constitution divided the Government into Three branches has two reasons.
1. So that Courts (Judicial) were separated from Government Leaders (Legistrative) so there was no bias. This is an example.
2. Was to divide the government as a whole into seperate, but equally important, parts. This could restore balance to the election system, Exp. Democrats make up the majority of the Legistrative and Judicial Branches and Republicans have the majority in the Executive Branch so The Republican Preident can Veto things that he/she finds un-beneficial then Republicans in the Legistrative Branch repeal the veto so that the people have more of an effect.

They wanted large and small states to be assured representation
So each constitution has its own powers and they are all eqaul
