The aristocracy of the time convinced people that it was chic for men to wear wigs because syphilis was rampant during this period and many people were hiding sores and bald patches that the disease created.
It was the style to wear these wigs. Of course, only aristocrats could afford them, so they were an indication of wealth and social standing. They were warm, so not bad in the winter, but miserably hot in the summer time.
Wigs also covered up unwashed hair, bugs and Spiders.

People wore wigs because they shaved there head to prevent/cure lice and fleas.They didn't want to be bald so they wore wigs.
