Everyone was starting to think new routes to Asia for trade. The silk road was long gone and it was dangerous to do. It also took too long and cost too much. Yet, there was a demand for the silks, perfumes, spices, and gunpowder that Asia could provide, so there had to be a better way to get there. Ships had evolved and navigational tools were also now invented. It was the perfect storm. The need was there, the will to get there, and the means. Spain and other crown heads also liked to spend money and needed more gold, so going to a New World sounded like a grand way to get more. Spend a little to get a lot ( so they thought). Columbus was in the right spot at the right time. It is a fable that he wanted to prove the world wasn't flat. It was all ready known that it wasn't, but he did promise gold on his return. Columbus for his part wanted to be rich and famous. He got neither.
