Queen Matilda In English History, the term "Middle Ages" is taken to mean the period between the Norman Conquest in 1066 and the end of The Wars of the Roses in 1485. It is also known as the Medieval Age. Mediaval is just a fancy word derived from Latin words meaning "middle" and "age." In 1100, Henry, the fourth son of William the Conqueror became King of England as Henry I. His son, William Adelin should have inherited the crown but he died in 1120, leaving only Henry's daughter, Matilda as his heir. Matilda was born in 1102 and on 11th January 1114, had married the Holy Roman Emperor, Henry V, hence she was also known as Empress Maud. Her husband died in 1125, leaving her a widow and she married Geoffrey, Count of Anjou on 17th June 1128. While her father was still alive the English Barons and other nobility had sworn an oath to support her as Queen, if her father had no other sons, but when her father died on 1st December 1135, her cousin, Stephen of Blois claimed the throne with the support of many of the Barons. This led to a long Civil War in England known as "The Anarchy" during which Stephen actually ruled over England. The situation was resolved when it was agreed that Matilda's son by Geoffrey of Anjou would become King when Stephen died. Her son became King on 25th October 1154, as King Henry II and he was the first King from the House of Plantagenet.
Now in days its really a matter of preference but usually the "head" of the family sits at one of the narrow ends of the table. The Patriarch (Father) at one end and directly across from the Matriarch (Mother). The tradition for a King and Queen was different as the tables in the Royal Dining Halls were quite long. In this case the King and Queen sat side by side in the middle of one of the long sides of the table usually in high back throne style chairs again bringing the attention to the King and Queen as the "Heads" of the table and the Kingdom.

RI would stand for Regina Imperatrix if a queen or Rex Imperator if a king. R means King or Queen and I means Emperor or Empress. Naturally, since the end of British Empire, Queen Elizabeth only signs with Elizabeth R now. However, her father signed George RI as he was Emperor of India (until Indian independence) as well as King of the United Kingdom.
