In UK Harold Wilson's Labour government decided that the UKs military priorities would not extend east of Suez.....
Because they believed theVietnamWar was a civil war , which it was, and that our involvement was unnecessary.
The groups within Australia that supported our involvement in the Vietnam war were: * The Returned Service League (RSL) * The Liberal party and Country (now known as National)party and * The older generation
Australia had conscription in place and active , before the Vietnam war in 1972 ,( or somewhere close to that) in the elections, the labor party defeated the democratic party. this was due to the labor party promising to abolish conscription and allow conscripted soldiers out of the army when labor won this did happen and there has not been conscription since
It was partly due to opposition to conscripts fighting overseas which the ALP had opposed since the Vietnam War. The union movement which was influential in the ALP had started to oppose the war influenced my militant, left-wing unions such as the SUA.Initially, the position was unpopular as seen in the 1966 election results but by 1969 sentiment in Australia had turned against the war and the war was a factor in Labors electoral success in 1972.
