The Middle Colonies had more diverse populations, primarily because there were many large, highly active seaports in that region (New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore for example) that were prime destinations for ships carrying immigrates.

Additionally, the South was mostly agricultural, and prior to the Civil War, entrant jobs were filled mostly by slave labor.
