North America was not populated by 'Missionaries' - the job of a missionary is to convert people who do not believe into believers.

The early colonists of North America were not so much missionaries as religious refugees, fleeing to America so that they could set up communities free to worship as they wished/believed.

This migration happened because of the religious oppression that was occurring in many part of Europe at the time.
