You are seriously mistaken. Most native Americans bathed regularly, even in the depths of winter without the benefit of hot water.
Robert Lowie, in his study of the culture of the Crow tribe of Montana, points out that water was credited by the Crow with medicinal properties. Early each morning, in summer and winter, the camp "crier" called everyone out of their lodges to bathe and drink as much water as they could: "Bire' daxu'a hi'a, bire' daxu'a kok" he shouted (make water contact your body, water isyour body).
A morning swim was a regular part of the daily routine, for both men and women, who bathed separately. In winter the ice first had to be cleared from the surface.
