The Neutrality Acts during the 1930's (WW2) tried to avoid the same mistakes made during WW1 -- making loans to Europe, giving them goods, and traveling on belligerent ships. U.S. started trading with England on a cash and carry basis so we wouldn't get attacked by German U-boats. But eventually, a couple of U.S. ships did get hit with torpedoes. The last event that forced us into the war was Pearl Harbor December 7, 1941. Even though America tried to be isolationist to European affairs, it was hard to avoid war when Japan attacked us.
