It wasn't peaceful - a United States fort - Fort Sumter was attacked by Confederate forces, and it was.

Of course, stating that the attack on Fort Sumter was the single first violent attack related to the sectional debate that triggered the war is not 100% correct. In Kansas, several years before, there was warfare between non-state military forces, with each side trying to elect a government that permitted or outlawed slavery.

John Brown on the abolitionist side played a role here, as he would later in the attack on a military base - with the ultimate goal of inciting and encouraging widespread slave rebellion. But it is certainly correct that the attack on Fort Sumter was the first violent act explicitly ordered by the Confederate government - in other words, it was unambiguously intended to say to the U.S. government - we're willing to fight to gain independence, and if you don't respond, that's exactly what will happen.

The Confederate leaders knew unambiguously that if the Union responded with either military action or a formal declaration of war, that the ultimate decision would come to blows - which most didn't think would lead to 620,000 deaths on both sides.

It is definitely true that the South was invaded much more than the North was, but Lee's army made several attempts to capture Washington D.C. Ultimately, the South decided on a defensive strategy not because they were committed to a "peaceful conflict" of any sort, but rather because they felt doing so wasn't absolutely necessary to achieving their final goal - while a successful invasion/conquest of the North would obviously help, it wasn't necessary.

It is true, however, that the Northern government did commit to responding to any act of aggression - if you consider "peaceful secession" to include under its term allowing the Confederacy to leave even after having attacking a military base, then your concept of what "peaceful" is might be a little mistaken.

The north never wanted to secede from the south. The south seceded from the north in 1860 to preserve the institution of slavery.
