Why were there less slaves in the southern colonies than in the northern colonies?

The northern colonies had less reliance on plantation agriculture, which required large numbers of slaves, whereas the southern colonies relied heavily on cash crops like cotton and tobacco that necessitated a large labor force. What were some of the characteristics of Northern colonies?

The northern colonies were the most populous of all the colonies. They had few to little slaves (and ultimately abolished slavery later on), were the most rebellious, patriotic, and the base of creation for the United States. On a more geographical base, the northern colonies contained poor soil but were a business/economic hub (which they remain today) and also had large lumbering, fishing, and shipbuilding communities.
