During the 11th Century, a number of factors led to population growth in Europe. The Medieval warm period led to an agricultural boom. Expansion and colonization were rampant. There were advances in technology. Social stability increased. All of these led to the a peak population of around 120 million people.

Farming methods improved during the high middle ages, including the adoption of the three field system an the development of better technology such as improved ploughs and the horse collar. More food meant more people, more people meant more labor was available to farm more land, resulting in a cycle of population growth.

The climate of the period also appears to have been favorable, with generally warmer weather than in the preceding few centuries.

There was also and increase in military and political stability. The viking raids had mostly ceased by the year 1000, and there was an increase in trade and urban areas.
