They thought it was far too slow and ponderous.

Most people in Spring 1861 thought it would be a short and glorious war, and they ridiculed this long-term strategy of slowly squeezing the life out of the Confederacy, like an anaconda.

Presently, they found that it was not going to be a short war at all, and the Union eventually followed a plan very similar to the Anaconda.

What events in what became West Virginia brought national attention to Major General McClellan in 1861?

In the late Spring and early Summer of 1861, Major General George B. McClellan assembled an infantry force and organized it for an extended operation in the western Virginia mountains. The people in western Virginia were not in favor of secession and this helped McClellan and his campaign to gain momentum in that part of the state. Within a month, McClellan's troops established control in this important border zone. McClellan had organized almost 20,000 volunteers and the Confederates had only about 3,000 troops to oppose the Union troops. The result was a Union victory in what were perhaps two skirmishes in western Virginia. The Northern press picked up on this successful story and labeled the skirmishes as major victories. McClellan was recognized in some Northern quarters as a master of organization and logistics which were required in that region of high mountains, deep forests and primitive communications.

What caused General in Chief McClellan to have General John A. Dix command the defenses of Washington DC?

Reportedly, General in Chief George B. McClellan sought to have General Dix command the defenses of Washington DC because Dix was a Democrat. McClellan had never ceased trying to find Democrats in political office to meet his agenda of taking over total control of Union policy regarding the US Civil War. This was true also with the Northern press. Especially with the nation's largest newspaper, the New York Herald, a solidly Democratic leaning newspaper.

When did Major General George B McClellan take command of Union troops near Washington DC?

McClellan was relieved of his command on October 7, 1862, by President Lincoln for a number of reasons, including being insubordinate to the President, fighting with General Winfield Scott, and for being much too cautious with the enemy, often failing to press forward to win a battle.

What did the northern newspapers call Winfield Scott's plan for defeating the south?

The Anaconda Plan, because it sounded like slow strangulation, when the Northern politicans and press were expecting a short, glorious war.

Why did US President Lincoln choose General George B McClellan to reorganize Northern troops after the Union failure at the First Battle of Bull Run?

McClellan had directed a successful campaign in western Virginia (which soon became West Virginia) in 1861. His opponent was actually Robert E. Lee, though Lee was not feared by northerners as he came to be the next year. In 1861 in western Virginia, Lee had too few men and tried a complicated plan, which the new soldiers did not grasp and his new staff officers did not adequately explain to Lee's widely scattered subordinate commanders in the mountainous region, where the population was mostly pro-Union. This was the sole bright spot on the Union military landscape. McClellan also talked a good game and was a very self-confident person, infatuated with himself. McClellan had been one of the rising stars of the prewar army, before resigning to take a job as president of the Illinois Central Rail Road. The lawyer for the Illinois Central was Abraham Lincoln.

Douglas.General McClellan had worked for Jefferson Davis a few years prior to the Civil War, from 1853 to 1857 to be exact.McClellan's grandfather was an American general in the Revolutionary War.Gen George B McClellan took a portable printing press into the field to print orders.A retired U S Grant waited for two days in Gen George McClellan's office hoping to get an officers commission. McClellan did not have time to see him. McClellan also snubbed Abraham Lincoln in McClellan's home. Lincoln went to see him to get him to move his troops against the enemy. How was Union General George B McClellan able to remain popular among the Northern public?

After the clear Union defeat of the Peninsula campaign, George B. McClellan remained a popular general and he had support of many newspapers. He and his Democrat allies had done much to present him as a great general that was the victim of the Lincoln administration. The press was able to place the blame on the Peninsula campaign disaster on Secretary of War, Edwin Stanton. According to a report in the popular newspaper, the Spirit of the Times, McClellan had sent one of his favorite brigadier generals to New York City to explain McClellan's views on national policy to business leaders, politicians, journalists and the large NY City newspapers. These publications had a wide national readership. Clearly McClellan had made a positive imprint on the North and it would cause President Lincoln to wait after the 1862 Off-year elections to relieve McClellan of his duties. When Lincoln finally was assured after the November elections, it was safe to end McClellan's career, he did so.
