King George wanted to keep peace with the Native Americans after the French and Indian War. So he proclaimed that no one will be allowed to settle beyond the Appalachian Mountains. This caused friction because it limited where American colonists could go and what they could do. It said that you can not settle the west, that meant that people who already lived in the area had to move, but they didn't for the most part. In fact the settlers proclaimed independence years before Thomas Jefferson wrote the declaration.
